NoLen Privacy Policy
NoLen is a local-first plain-text note-taking and calendarization app. Text entered by the user remains the authoritative copy, while parsed dates and schedule suggestions are handled separately.
Controller and contact
The party responsible for NoLen's data handling is the “NoLen Developer.” To ask a privacy question or exercise a privacy right, email raio.kharlharary@gmail.com.
No automatic collection by the developer
The NoLen Developer does not automatically collect note contents, calendar entries, usage data, advertising identifiers, location, contacts, or photos from the app to a developer-operated server. NoLen uses no advertising, third-party tracking, or analytics SDKs.
Data processed and stored on your device
To provide its features, NoLen processes and stores the following on the user's device:
- Note contents, titles, creation dates, and modification dates
- Calendar entries and schedule suggestions created or confirmed from notes
- Daily notes, history, settings, and user-defined phrases
- Attachments, attachment records, internal links, and subnote relationships
This data is used to provide NoLen's features. The NoLen Developer normally cannot access data stored on a user's device.
iCloud, notifications, and device authentication
In signed distribution builds where sync is enabled, NoLen may use Apple CloudKit to sync app data with the private database associated with the user's Apple Account. The CloudKit container is iCloud.com.ryo.NoLen.
With permission, NoLen uses local notifications on the device. Apple Push Notification service (APNs) may process a device token and delivery metadata to deliver CloudKit sync updates. NoLen does not independently add note contents to push-notification payloads.
Authentication using Face ID, Touch ID, or the device passcode is handled by the operating system's LocalAuthentication framework. The NoLen Developer does not receive or store biometric data.
Information provided in support requests
If a user emails support, the NoLen Developer may receive the user's email address, name or display name, device, operating-system and app versions, the inquiry, and any text or screenshots the user voluntarily attaches.
This information is used only to reply, investigate defects, address security issues, and improve the service. Do not send personal, confidential, or third-party information that is unnecessary for support.
Update checks and public website
NoLen retrieves update-policy.json over HTTPS from GitHub Pages to check update information. As part of that connection, GitHub or other hosting providers may process network data such as the IP address, User-Agent, and access time. The NoLen Developer does not use this connection for advertising, tracking, or behavioral analytics.
Service providers and international processing
The following providers may process data in the countries and regions where they operate, which may be outside the user's country of residence:
- Apple and its affiliates: CloudKit sync, APNs, and device-authentication infrastructure. Retention follows the user's Apple Account settings and Apple's policies.
- GitHub, Inc. (a Microsoft company): network data associated with delivery of update information and the public website. Retention follows GitHub's policies.
- Google LLC and its affiliates: support emails, attachments, and related network data processed through Gmail.
The NoLen Developer does not sell user data or provide it to third parties for advertising.
Legal bases
Where applicable law requires a legal basis, providing NoLen's features and responding to requested support are based on performance of a contract; security and quality improvement are based on legitimate interests; and optional features are based on consent. Notifications and iCloud sync can be managed in operating-system settings.
Retention and deletion
- On-device data remains until the user deletes it in NoLen or removes NoLen from the device.
- CloudKit data follows deletion actions and Apple Account management. Removing the app alone may not immediately delete data stored in iCloud.
- Support emails and attachments are generally deleted within 12 months after the inquiry is closed, unless longer retention is necessary for legal compliance, dispute resolution, or security.
- Network records maintained by service providers follow each provider's retention policy.
Your rights
Subject to applicable law, users may request access to, correction or deletion of, restriction of processing of, or withdrawal of consent for support information held by the NoLen Developer. Minimal information may be requested to verify identity. Because the NoLen Developer normally cannot access notes stored on a device or in the user's private CloudKit database, users should manage that data in NoLen or through their Apple Account.
Children
NoLen is not designed specifically for children. A user who is below the age at which parental consent is required in their jurisdiction should use NoLen and contact support only with a parent or guardian's consent or supervision.
Changes to this policy
This policy may be revised when features or legal requirements change. Material changes will be announced on this page or through an appropriate in-app notice.
